Empowering our Boys to Respect and Celebrate Diversity

The Leaders of Tomorrow are Those Who Care

We promote a positive approach to social justice by encouraging our boys to be courageous and intentional in their interactions with social justice issues at an age-appropriate level.

To achieve this, we focus on four key areas: Community Building, Well-being, Social Justice and Inclusivity.

We believe that by providing our boys with the opportunity to engage in these topics, we are equipping them to be the leaders of tomorrow and striving for a better, more inclusive and just world.

It takes a village to teach inclusion.

Leading By Example

Actions say more than words. It is for this reason that we take a bottom-up approach to teaching Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging. Each member of The Ridge School community plays an important role in creating an inclusive and safe learning environment.

Our Boys

We aim to open dialogues with our boys to discuss themes of acknowledgment, inclusivity, respect, and consideration for the uniqueness of each of their peers. We encourage our boys to lead these discussions by creating a safe space for them to share their own insights and amplify the voices of their peers.

We drive unique initiatives for each grade to teach inclusive values and introduce different topics at an age-appropriate level. For example, the Happy Chappie initiative, for our Grade 3 boys. This encourages our boys to practise both self-reflection and consideration for others by coming up with their own ideas about how they can bring each learner in their grade together by actively listening and engaging with those from unique backgrounds to their own.

Our Teachers

We provide continuous professional development opportunities for our teachers where we aim not only to upskill them in teaching methodology and information, but also in themes of social justice and inclusion in our curriculum. The learning opportunities include discussions on equity, transparency, creating safe spaces, awareness, diversity, inclusion and more.

Our teachers play an imperative role in guiding these gentle discussions with our boys and setting precedents through leading by example. Our training has been well received by our staff members and we are already implementing the plans and procedures.

Our teachers spend the most time with our boys; they play a vital role in listening to their needs and advocating for their voices in the development of initiatives and procedures for our social justice policies.

Our Parents

Respect and discipline begin at home. We aim to include our parents in interactive sessions where we discuss how we can support each other to ensure we are all on the same page, both at home and at school. We hope to draw on the experiences of our parents to make this a meaningful, fair, helpful and informed programme.

Topics include support, upskilling, cultural differences and customs, curriculum guidance, building confidence around unfamiliar and difficult discussions, and mediation in differences of opinion. We are proud to be facilitating these types of discussions and collaborations with you, our boys’ parents, as we actively work together to build a better future for our children.

This process helps define what our community’s needs are and uplifts the voices of the whole “village” and ultimately supports raising our leaders of the future.

Our Key Priorities

Our priority is fostering a school environment where every stakeholder (our boys, our teachers and our parents) is given equal opportunities to play a guiding role in our curriculum to ensure that:

Everyone feels heard, seen and included.
The vision of each stakeholder is trusted and respected.
Fairness is considered in each decision made.
All members of our community are treated equally with grace, dignity and respect.
Equal opportunities are given to our staff, parents and our boys. Togetherness is at the heart of our discussions, bridging the gap between all sections of the school.
We are united in our drive towards shared goals.

How Will We Determine If We Are on the Right Track?

Action is just as important as vision. To determine whether our initiatives are on track, we will reflect on the following:

  • The morale of our boys and our staff.
  • We are outcome-oriented.
  • Social justice is part of our community and not only a reactionary measure.
  • All cultures are given equal opportunities and space to exist within our community.
  • We hold robust dialogues at various levels and regularly.
  • There is less conflict within all areas of the school.
  • All members of our community feel safe.

We will determine this through surveys and external feedback, by following up with our community and checking in with our boys.
