Music

Our school’s musical programme offers a diverse range of opportunities for boys to develop their talents, perform in various ensembles
and engage with the community through music. Throughout the year, boys across all grades participate in different musical groups,
festivals, concerts and special events that enrich their experience and foster a lifelong appreciation for music.

Ensemble and Orchestra Performances:

Boys have the chance to perform in multiple ensemble settings. The Marimba Bands and Senior Orchestra proudly represent the school at external events and regularly perform on prominent stages providing boys with valuable performance experience in a formal setting. Ensemble Opportunities on offer: Guitar Ensemble, Senior Orchestra, Jazz Band, Rock Band.

Individual Music Tuition:

Our boys are given the opportunity to learn musical instruments in privately tutored lessons. These take place during the school day, enabling boys to have a well-rounded day so they do not have to choose between cultural and sporting activities. We also provide a comprehensive Music Theory programme that complements our boys’ musical development. Instruments on offer include: Piano, Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone, Recorder, Violin, Cello, Trumpet, Trombone, French Horn, Voice, Drums, Guitar, Bass Guitar, Ukulele.

Choir Activities:

Our choirs participate actively both within the school and in the wider community. The Senior Choir is open to all boys in Grades 4-7 and performs at significant liturgical events and Services. They also take part in external concerts and festivals, including collaborative events with the Drakensberg Boys Choir, offering boys the chance to perform alongside renowned musicians. We have a smaller Chamber Choir, which is an audition-based choir. This choir learns more challenging repertoire and often performs at important calendar events.

Marimba Bands

The Grade 4 to 7 marimba bands are a vibrant part of our musical culture, performing at key school occasions like Music Assemblies, Founders Day, Africa Day and Heritage Day. Their music consistently brings joy and cultural richness to the school community and beyond.

Special Events and Festivals:

Music plays an integral role in the school’s annual Founders’ Day Celebrations, featuring performances by the Rockband, Jazzband and Guitar Ensemble on the Rose Field’s Rock stage. These groups practice year-round, refining their skills to deliver energetic performances that celebrate the school spirit. One of the highlights on the school’s musical calendar is the Choir Festival held at the Linder Auditorium, proudly hosted by The Ridge. Our community absolutely loves these festivals and our Senior Choir enjoys the opportunity to perform on this stage.

Community Engagement:

The school’s Community Carols by Candlelight event marks the festive season, bringing together all choirs and families for a memorable evening of music. Despite occasional weather challenges, this event remains a cherished tradition, often concluding with joyful and unexpected moments like flash mobs involving staff and boys alike.

Senior Prep Music and Drama Performances

Drama

Our Drama programme is an important part of developing each facet of each Ridge boy.
Teaching confidence, creativity and coping mechanisms through dramatic pieces and exercises.

Senior Primary Performing Opportunities – Trinity:

Our Grade 4-7 boys are involved in the TRINITY Eisteddfods that take place annually, a place where they receive encouraging and constructive feedback. The boys have a large amount of fun preparing for their performances and bring their own creative flair to their performances.

Headmaster’s Masterclass in Drama:

Each year, our headmaster, Mr Rumboll, invites a group of Grade 7s to participate in his Performing Arts showcase at the start of the year. The sky is the limit to these showcases, as the boys work together and create the story and set the scene by working as a team, guided by staff and the Drama department. These showcases are meant to provoke thought at introspection while working through tough texts and in-depth poetry and conception.

Annual Production:

Each year, there is a drama showcase piece that provides the Grade 7s with an opportunity to step into the limelight and play the main roles on stage. In these productions, all boys have a place to shine, whether on stage, backstage, or as part of the audiovisual technical team. Every second year, the production takes the format of a musical where the Grade 4-6 boys join in to perform songs and dances.
