From curiosity to confidence, we equip our boys with the tools to think boldly and learn for life.

Core Subjects

At The Ridge School Senior Prep, Maths and English are taught through a balance of strong core skills and innovative approaches that make learning meaningful. In English, boys explore comprehension in dynamic ways, using discussions, creative responses, and real-world texts to deepen understanding, critical thinking and the acquisition of vital language skills. In Maths, problem-solving is emphasised alongside traditional methods, with practical applications, investigations and collaborative activities ensuring that key mathematical skills are acquired and applied in meaningful contexts. This blend ensures that core competencies are mastered while fostering curiosity, confidence and a love of learning.

PBL

Our PBL curriculum thoughtfully integrates subjects like Social Sciences, Natural Sciences and Design & Technology, enabling boys to connect knowledge across disciplines. They explore big questions, solve real-life problems, and produce meaningful outcomes that extend beyond the classroom. These cross-curricular experiences promote curiosity, build collaboration and instil confidence, essential skills for lifelong learning.

STEAM

STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics) is embedded across the curriculum to ignite innovation and hands-on learning. A dedicated Drama teacher strengthens our performing arts offering and supports integrated curriculum delivery. Learning is enriched through visual and performing arts, building confidence and self-expression.

Arts

Dynamic and practical art teaching plays a vital role in developing skills that extend far beyond the art room. Through hands-on exploration of different media and techniques, boys learn creativity, problem-solving and innovation, while also strengthening fine motor skills and spatial awareness. Collaborative projects encourage teamwork and communication, while independent work fosters perseverance and self-expression. Importantly, the lessons learnt in art, such as resilience when facing mistakes, flexibility in thinking, and the ability to see multiple perspectives, are transferable to all areas of learning and life. Art teaching therefore nurtures both essential skills and meaningful life lessons in a practical, engaging way.

Multilingualism Through First Additional Language (FAL)

At the start of Grade 4, boys choose either isiZulu or Afrikaans as their First Additional Language. Our imaginative FAL curriculum is designed to generate excitement for language learning and foster a willingness to engage. Through music, storytelling, games and role-play, boys build the confidence to communicate and develop a deeper appreciation of South Africa’s rich linguistic and cultural diversity.

Programmes with Purpose and Themed Learning Experiences

Signature learning experiences deepen engagement and provide practical, real-world learning opportunities:

The Game of Life (Grade 6):

A simulation where boys explore adult responsibilities such as budgeting, saving and decision-making. It builds financial literacy and empathy in a hands-on format.

Market Day (Grade 7):

A team-based entrepreneurial project where boys create, market and sell products. Proceeds support charities or school initiatives, encouraging enterprise with purpose.

Tour de Maths & Problem of the Week:

Events that stretch mathematical thinking and promote strategic problem-solving. Emphasis is placed on reasoning, process and resilience rather than just correct answers.

Literacy Week:

A celebration of storytelling and creative expression through workshops, performances, and reading events that spark a lifelong love of literature.

Cultural Week:

A joyful exploration of identity, diversity, and heritage through inter-house quizzes, performances and learning experiences.

Preparing Boys for the Future

The Senior Prep journey is about much more than preparing for high school; it is about developing boys who are ready to thrive in a complex, ever-changing world. Our boys leave Grade 7 with a strong academic foundation, emotional intelligence and the confidence to lead, serve and adapt. Feedback from high schools confirms that Ridge boys are known for their readiness, resilience and character, with many earning scholarships and accolades along the way. Many Ridge boys become Head Boys and achieve Dux Awards at some of South Africa’s leading Independent Colleges.

At The Ridge, every boy is known and grown. Every voice is heard. Every journey is supported. Our mission is not just to educate, but to inspire boys to become curious, compassionate and courageous young people, ready to make a difference.
