The history of The Ridge is not just kept in dusty archives; it lives in the hearts of thousands of Old Boys, teachers, parents, and staff who have called this School home. Their stories, memories and friendships form the fabric of our identity.
1919
The Ridge School began modestly in 1919 atop a veld and rock-covered koppie in Westcliff, in a single-storey house with a shingle roof and open verandas. This original home, The Woolsack, looked out over the Parktown Valley.
The Day The Ridge School Opened
On 8 August 1919, fifteen excited young boys stepped through the gates of The Ridge School for the very first time. Little did they know that they were starting a legacy that would stand strong for more than a century. Under the guidance of three dedicated staff members, who became known as the school’s first joint headmasters, a remarkable journey in education began. By mid-year, the school had already grown to 41 boys, a testament to the need for a school that offered not just education but a nurturing environment where children could thrive.

Then and now: Rooted in values, reaching forward
Over time, buildings and grounds were expanded to meet the growing demand and a flourishing reputation.
Though more than 100 years have passed, much of The Ridge remains beautifully unchanged. Our boys still wear the iconic grey blazer and socks, with the cerise RS crest proudly embroidered, symbols of tradition, unity and excellence.
